Imran Khan’s personal physician denies PTI’s slow poisoning claim in jail

  • “Former prime minister is hale and hearty,” he says.
  • Bushra Bibi has earlier voiced concerns about Khan’s safety.

RAWALPINDI: Dr Faisal Sultan, the personal physician of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, said there was no obvious indication that the former prime minister was being slow-poisoned during custody, The News reported.

Dr Sultan’s remarks came during a conversation with journalists outside the Adiala jail, where he visited for a meeting with Khan on Thursday.

The doctor said the PTI chairman was neither under the influence of poison nor was he given any and he found Khan “fit” during the meeting.

“The former prime minister is hale and hearty,” he said.

Meanwhile, recording his statement with the joint investigation team (JIT), the PTI chairman Thursday denied his involvement in the May 9 violent riots and said he was in jail when the incident occurred.

The statement was recorded in the presence of his lawyers.

The JIT, led by SSP (Operations) Rawalpindi Faisal Saleem, comprised SP (Potohar) Waqas Khan, DSP (New Town) Malik Allah Yar, an inspector and a sub-inspector.

The JIT remained in the jail for 45 minutes and grilled Imran.

The people engaged in the investigation said Imran straightaway rejected the allegations about his involvement in the violence and responded to the questions momentarily and parried tricky and confusing queries.

It should be noted that Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, had voiced concerns about her incarcerated husband’s security and safety, saying he could “be poisoned” in Attock jail, where he was previously held in custody following his arrest on August 5.

In a letter written to the Punjab home secretary, the former first lady said the court had directed authorities concerned to shift his husband to Adiala jail in Rawalpindi.

“My husband has been imprisoned in Attock jail without any justification. According to the law, my husband should be transferred to Adiala jail,” she added.

Khan was taken into custody in August after a court gave him a three-year prison sentence in the Toshakhana case related to the sale of state gifts that he received as prime minister from foreign dignitaries during his 2018-22 tenure. This sentence, however, was overturned by the Islamabad High Court. However, the PTI chief was then arrested in the cipher case for which he continues to remain incarcerated in the Adiala jail.
