A panel of judges in the high court was considering the plea of Mohammad Bux Palari, a peasant, over the improper disposal of waste and debris from the illicit cattle market into the Thado dam reservoir.

The court directed the DC Malir to seize the illegal cattle market and also prohibited the sale or transfer of the related plot.

The court instructed the chief secretary to establish a high-level committee and mandated that legal measures be taken against the officials implicated in the issue once the committee’s conclusions are available.

The court also mandated the elimination of unlawful encroachments.

Prior to this, the Assistant Advocate General informed the court that Jameel Ahmed has unlawfully seized a four-acre parcel of land.

Dawood Narejo, the attorney for the petitioner, stated that a guy named Jameel has established an unauthorised livestock market where waste from animals and other rubbish is being dumped into the water of Thado dam. “Numerous diseases are transmitted through the use of the contaminated water from the reservoir,” the counsel added.

The lawyer stated that despite multiple appeals to the police and other government departments, the illegal cattle market has not been eradicated from the site.

The defendant’s counsel informed the bench that his client has obtained the land through a lease agreement.

The Thado dam is a retention reservoir constructed in Karachi to store rainwater from local rivers.
