Information indicates that Punjab’s jails are 80 percent overcrowded.

According to the data, Punjab’s jails can house 37,563 convicts, yet there are currently around 67,000 detainees housed in 43 jails throughout the province.

932 juvenile prisoners and 1,167 women are incarcerated in Punjabi jails.

6,616 prisoners can be housed in the high-security cells and barracks. Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Mianwali are the locations of the high-security cells and barracks.

In nine districts of Punjab, up to 824 death cells have been set up in the past 14 years.

The greatest number of death cells is found in Lahore’s major jail. In Lahore’s central jail, there are 312 death cells.

It is important to note that even though the province has seen the establishment of 11 new prisons since 2010, the jails are still 80 percent overcrowded.

It violates the prisoners’ fundamental rights, according to legal expert Chaudhry Naseer Kamboh, and the government ought to take prompt action to resolve the matter.

“Inmates have rights as well. Advocate Syed Moazam Ali Shah stated that the rights of prisoners are violated by overcrowded prisons.
