Gen. Syed Asim Munir will continue to lead the army until 2028 following the passage of legislation extending the tenure of the service chiefs, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif announced on Monday.

“Many of the army chiefs had previously received the extensions,” Asif stated. The chapter referring to the term extension has now been closed following the bill’s adoption.

“The approval of the bill to extend the term of the service chiefs will benefit democratic governments in the future,” he stated.

Following the ratification of the measure to raise the number of seats on the SC judges in the face of opposition objections, the National Assembly (NA) and Senate adopted bills to extend the terms of the services chiefs.

Details indicate that emotions escalated during the NA session, which was chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. These tensions led to a physical brawl between the ruling party and members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
