Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director (MD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), met with Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif during the World Government Summit (WGS) 2025. The meeting’s main topics were Pakistan’s current IMF program and the macroeconomic stability brought about by the government’s extensive reform program.
The talks emphasized Pakistan’s resolve to carry out structural changes and uphold fiscal restraint, both of which have been crucial in reestablishing economic stability and will be particularly important in promoting long-term, sustainable growth.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the advancements made possible by the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF), which has been instrumental in stabilizing Pakistan’s economy and putting it on the road to a sustained recovery.
In crucial areas like tax reform, energy sector efficiency, and private sector development, he reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining the reform momentum. The Prime Minister reassured Ms. Georgieva that Pakistan is dedicated to sustainability, efficiency, and economic prudence as key pillars for attaining inclusive and long-term growth.
Ms. Georgieva praised Pakistan’s efforts to successfully carry out the program funded by the IMF, emphasizing the nation’s improving economic performance as evidenced by growing growth and falling inflation. She acknowledged that Pakistan’s economy has recovered and is headed toward growth.
The Managing Director of the IMF also praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his personal dedication and leadership in advancing the nation’s reform agenda, which has been essential to attaining economic stability and advancement.
