In the upcoming days, cold and dry weather is predicted to engulf Karachi, prompting the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) to warn of an enhanced cold wave beginning on Saturday, January 4.
Although there may be a little drop in chilly weather today and tomorrow (Friday), the PMD clarified in a statement on Thursday that westerly winds are expected to bring about a change in the situation. According to the Met Office, these winds would eventually bring chilly winds to Karachi, which could bring rain to Balochistan.
The city recorded a minimum temperature of 13.5°C and a humidity of 58%. Six kilometers an hour of wind, coming from the north, was recorded.
With temperatures falling into the single digits multiple times last month, the city has already been dealing with cold weather.
9.5°C and 9.1°C were the lowest recorded temperatures, respectively, highlighting the severe winter weather.
The weather report is issued in the midst of persistent worries over Karachi’s worsening air quality. The Swiss air quality monitor IQAir rated the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) as “very unhealthy” on December 31, 2024, when it hit a worrying 237.
The quantity of harmful PM2.5 particles, which can enter the bloodstream and lead to major health problems, was measured at 162 µg/m³, which is an astounding 32.4 times higher than what the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends.
