According to Sardar Owais Ahmed Khan Leghari, the Federal Minister for Power, talks are in progress with independent power producers to rationalise pricing, with the possibility of forensic audit and arbitration.

The minister said that by upholding transparency, the government has been able to reduce IGCEP by roughly 7000 mw, or 17000 mw, saving a significant amount of money on costly power during a meeting with global and IMF officials on power sector reforms.

Owais Leghari briefed the authorities on the electricity division’s reforms, which included converting imported coal to domestic coal and closing furnace oil-based plants.

He claimed that another stage in rationalising power rates is the removal of the electricity duty and the rationalisation of subsidies.

He added that the remaining consumers are burdened with RS 150 billion as a result of the government’s plans to rationalise nett metering.
