PTA will grant fixed satellite service licenses.

In an effort to improve the nation’s satellite communication infrastructure, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has declared its intention to provide licenses for the delivery of Fixed Satellite Services (FSS).

A draft policy detailing the new licensing regime’s terms and conditions has been created and made available for public review.

According to the draft, the license will be valid for a period of 15 years, with license holders required to commence services within 18 months of issuance. The initial fee for obtaining an FSS license has been set at $500,000.

There will be limitations even if the license will grant access to mobile satellite services and public switched terrestrial networks. Under this license, satellite-based services for ships, airplanes, and automobiles, as well as radio and television broadcasting, will not be allowed.

In addition to operational guidelines, the draft mandates strict adherence to the PTA Act, Rules, and the Pakistan Space Activities Rules 2024. License holders will also be required to ensure robust data protection measures and maintain a transparent billing system to safeguard consumer interests.

The PTA has invited feedback from stakeholders, industry experts, and the public on the proposed draft. All suggestions and concerns must be submitted by February 14, as part of the public consultation process.
