UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk has expressed apprehension regarding the circumstances in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, urging the international community to amplify efforts to safeguard fundamental freedoms and the institutions established to uphold them.

During the Human Rights Council Meeting in Geneva, Turk expressed his apprehension regarding the implementation of restrictive legislation and the harassment of Human Rights Defenders and Independent Journalists, which has led to Arbitrary Detention and a constricted Civic Space, particularly in Kashmir.

India’s Ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Arindam Bagchi, expressed discontent with Turk’s comments on Kashmir.

Volker Turk urged enhanced initiatives to tackle violence and displacement in the Indian state of Manipur, emphasising discussion, peace-building, and human rights.
