As areas of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, flood due to heavy rain, schools are closed.

Several portions of Islamabad and Rawalpindi on Tuesday experienced urban flooding following heavy downpour that submerged several residential areas and prompted officials to close down schools and colleges in Rawalpindi for the day.

Torrential rain brought flooding to several neighbourhoods around Pirwadhai including Safdarabad, Gali Loharan and Fauji Colony, with water entering homes and shops. The vehicles were submerged in Awan Colony and Union Councils 4 and 5 areas were also impacted.

The city was overwhelmed with rains and one of the main business centers of Rawalpindi Raja Bazaar was also flooded.

The water level in Nullah Lai kept rising following the heavy downpour prompting authorities to issue an evacuation alert for residents living in vulnerable areas along the watercourse.

Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner announced holiday for all public and private educational institutions in the city on Tuesday in view of severe weather conditions.

Wasa said Shamsabad received the most rain at 197mm, followed by New Katarian at 184mm and Golra at 157mm. The Pakistan Meteorological Department recorded 146mm at their station while Pirwadhai received 86mm rain.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has expected more rain in the upper and central sections of the country in the next 48 hours.

Rain is forecast in numerous parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.

The authorities cautioned that continuous rain in the upper areas would boost water flow in rivers and enhance the danger of flooding in streams and nullahs.
