Coal mine rescue effort ends after 45 hours; dead toll stands at 34
Authorities said all 34 trapped miners in the disaster have been retrieved as the nearly 45-hour search and rescue effort at a private coal mine in the Soranj area of Balochistan comes to an end.
In the final part of the operation, rescue personnel recovered the bodies of two more miners, taking the death toll to 34, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said.
The miners’ remains were buried under debris at a depth of about 1,600 feet, making the rescue operation very difficult, the PDMA said. Rescue crews bulldozed hundreds of feet of debris to reach the trapped miners and managed to get all the victims out.
The tragedy took place Thursday afternoon at a private coal mine in Soranj and rescue services immediately launched a comprehensive search and recovery effort.
