Eminent religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil’s son commits ‘suicide’

Renowned religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jamil’s son committed suicide at his house in Talamba, their native town in Punjab, claimed the police following an initial investigation of the incident on Sunday.

According to Multan’s Regional Police Officer (RPO) Captain (retd) Sohail Chaudhry, “The DPO [district police officer] has seen a CCTV footage that shows Asim Jamil committing suicide.”

He was of the view that Asim shot himself in the chest. The police officer also said that they were sending the footage for forensic analysis.

RPO Chaudhry further said that Asim was a psychiatric patient and had been under medication for many years. He took his own life with a 30-bore pistol, the RPO said, adding, “Asim asked his domestic help — Imran — to bring the pistol.”

Giving details of the tragedy, the police officer said that when Asim turned the muzzle of the gun towards his chest, the domestic help asked him not to do so.

“He married a girl of his choice but they later divorced,” the RPO added.

Earlier, the noted religious scholar took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and announced the death of his son, saying: “My son Asim Jamil passed away in Tulamba [Khanewal, Punjab] today.”

Earlier, Chaudhry said, “Asim died of a bullet wound.” Responding to a question, the police officer said that the police reached the site and were collecting information about the incident.

The RPO added that Asim received a bullet in his chest.

Meanwhile, Punjab Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar has sought a detailed report in this regard from the Multan RPO.

A spokesperson of the Punjab police said that the IG has directed to ascertain the causes of Asim’s death in the light of evidence and the forensic report. The spokesperson further said that Khanewal DPO and other senior officials have reached the scene and evidence has been collected.

Condolences pour in

Grief and sorrow over the sudden death of Maulana Tariq Jamil’s son was deeply felt across the country and it prompted people from all walks of life to extend their condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult period.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar expressed his deep grief and sorrow over the death of Asim Jameel.

Expressing his condolence, the prime minister prayed for the departed soul and for the bereaved family to bear the loss with equanimity, PM Office media wing said in a press release.

Expressing his grief and sorrow over the demise of Asim, PML-N President and former prime minister Shehbaz Sharif offered his condolences to the religious scholar and the beavered family.

“We all share your grief and pain,” he said, adding that their prayers and sympathies are with them.

The PML-N leader also prayed that “May Allah Almighty grant courage and strength to the bereaved families to bear this irreparable loss with fortitude and rest the departed soul in eternal peace”.

In his message, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf extended his heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the family of Maulana Tariq Jamil on the accidental death of Asim.

He prayed for the elevation of the departed soul. “May Allah grant solace and fortitude to Jamil and his family during this challenging period.”

In her condolence message, PML-N Senior Vice President and Chief Organiser Maryam Nawaz prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. “May God give his family the courage and strength to bear this incredible loss.”

Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani also expressed deep grief over the unfortunate demise of Jamil’s son. “May Allah elevate the ranks of the departed soul and grant patience to his father and the bereaved family in this difficult time,” he prayed to Allah.

FO admits that a boat capsized in Greece, killing four Pakistanis.

The deaths of four Pakistanis in a boat capsizing event close to the southern Greek island of Goudos have been verified by the Foreign Office.

The incident happened on Sunday and at least five illegal immigrants drowned as a result. According to Greek Coast Guards, 39 people were rescued after the wooden boat overturned, but 40 more are still unaccounted for.

According to a Foreign Office spokeswoman, the four Pakistani nationals were among those killed in the catastrophe. In order to help the remaining Pakistanis and repatriate the corpses of the deceased, the Pakistani Embassy in Athens has been in close communication with Greek authorities, she said.

Additional information was given by Aamir Aftab Qureshi, Pakistan’s ambassador to Greece, during a press conference. According to him, there were 80 Pakistanis on board the doomed boat, and efforts are still being made to find the people who are still missing.

He added that the overcrowding on the boat was a factor in the capsizing. There are worries over the safety of the missing people because a sizable portion of them are children. He stated that five boats carrying Pakistani nationals were traveling illegally from Libya.

The public was also informed by Ambassador Qureshi that the government will pay for the return flight of the accident victims’ bodies.
