Floods, Landslides Strike Northern India, Killing at Least 25

At least 25 people perished in floods and landslides caused by severe rain throughout northern and northeastern India over the weekend, officials said on Monday, with more rain anticipated over the next several days.

At least 15 persons died in various rain-related accidents in Poonch, Rajouri and Doda districts of Indian-occupied Kashmir and numerous others were reported missing, a senior police officer said.

At least nine people died and four bodies retrieved after several landslides caused by continuous rains in Nagaland, a northeastern state, a top district official told Reuters.

One person perished in flooding in adjacent Assam on Sunday, the state disaster management office reported. Torrential rains have affected more than 57,000 people across seven districts of the state.“Active monsoon conditions are very likely to continue over Northwest, East & Northeast India during the next 6-7 days,” India’s weather agency stated in a post on social media website X.

In neighbouring Himalayan country Nepal, 27 people have died, one is missing and 69 others have been injured in floods, landslides, heavy rain and lightning strikes since the monsoon started in mid-June, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said.

Several routes including the one connecting the national capital, Kathmandu, with southern plains have been blocked by rubble thrown after landslides, police said on Monday.

Nepal’s weather authority anticipated light to moderate rainfall across much of the Himalayan nation on Monday, with heavy rain in isolated places in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.
