In a milestone to increase women’s representation in community-based conflict resolution in tribal territory, a woman has been appointed in the conflict Resolution Council (DRC) of South Waziristan for the first time.

Razia Mehsud, a social activist, is the first woman to join the 17-member Dispute Resolution Council (DRC), a move seen as a historic milestone for women’s participation in local decision-making and access to justice.

The council was formed on the recommendation of District Police Officer (DPO) Arshad Khan by the Regional Police Officer (RPO) Dera Ismail Khan.

The inclusion of Razia Mehsud will enhance the alternative dispute resolution system by including a wider spectrum of the community and encourage more women to take part in settling local conflicts, officials added.

Her nomination has been praised by social activists, tribal elders and members of the local community, who have called it a vital step towards fostering gender inclusion and increasing women’s involvement in the legal system in the combined tribal districts.

Observers suggested the decision could encourage more women to join public institutions and take part in community affairs across the region.
