Govt to take action against ‘attack’ on Islamabad’s judicial complex

Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said Tuesday that the government would take action against perpetrators for “attacking” the judicial complex, rioting, and sabotaging the judiciary’s dignity during Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s appearance in Islamabad courts.

In a press conference alongside Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leaders Azma Bukhari and Talal Chaudhry, the minister said that the culprits would be booked and arrested on terror charges.

Security arrangements at Sector G-11 of the judicial complex were disrupted as PTI workers removed all barriers during their chief’s appearances in the different courts. On the occasion, some of the workers vandalised the building and undermined the decorum of the courts.

Commenting on the “special treatment” given to Khan by the country’s courts and how the situation worsened in the federal capital as his supporters gathered to welcome him, Sanaullah said: “The banking court, which is present in the judicial complex, was stormed by around 400 ‘worker-like goons’ who were with them.”

“They attacked the policemen on duty by pushing them and ripping their uniforms apart and caused damage to the building by breaking its glass,” the interior minister said.

He added that despite the riots, Khan was still granted bail. However, the minister — who is also a PML-N leader from Punjab — said that the government will take strict legal action against these goons.

Sanaullah said that the “pampering behaviour” of the courts encourages hostility among Khan’s supporters. “The event that took place today, in which the judicial complex and the judiciary were attacked, only happened because they are receiving mild treatment.”

He condemned the attack and asserted that legal action is inevitable after what has happened today.

The deposed prime minister, who was ousted from office last April, has so far received interim bail in three cases.

Earlier today, a district and sessions court in Islamabad issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for the PTI chief in the Toshakhana case, while an anti-terrorism court (ATC) and banking court granted interim bail to Khan after he appeared before them at the judicial complex. The Islamabad High Court (IHC) also granted interim bail to the PTI chief in an attempted murder case.

Ali Amin Gandapur, the chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Umar Tanveer Butt have been convicted of terrorism by the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad. The case is related to demonstrations against the disqualification of Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

ATC Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra heard the case, and processes to designate former Federal Minister Amir Mahmood Kayani as a proclaimed offender were also initiated. PTI leaders Wasiq Qayyum and Faisal Javed also made an appearance before the court during the hearing.

The proclaimed offenders’ cases would be kept apart from the other accused by the court. For a few of the defendants who were not present, arrest warrants were issued.

In his petition, Senator Faisal Javed asked that the case’s terrorism-related clauses be eliminated. The hearing was postponed until January 15 by the court, which also ordered arguments on the petitions that were filed.

A demonstration against Imran Khan’s disqualification led to the case’s registration at Islamabad’s I-9 Police Station in 2022.

PTI founder Imran Khan is expected to meet with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) negotiation committee, which is in communication with the government, in Adiala jail today (Monday),

Sources claim that Omar Ayub, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Allama Nasir Abbas, Salman Akram Raja, and Asad Qaiser—all members of the negotiation committee—will meet with the founder of the PTI.

According to sources, the PTI founder and Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur, are also scheduled to meet one-on-one today.

Attorney Faisal Chaudhary, who founded the PTI, would support the bargaining committee. The PTI founder would be consulted by the negotiation committee on the third round of talks with the government, according to sources.

The coordination committees of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) are scheduled to convene today at the Governor’s House in Lahore to deliberate on power-sharing arrangements in Punjab.

The PPP delegation would comprise Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mahmood, Nadeem Afzal Chan, Hassan Murtaza, and Ali Haider Gilani.

Ishaq Dar, Azam Nazir Tarar, Rana Sanaullah, Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan, and Maryam Aurangzeb will represent the PML-N.

The conference will discuss local issues in Punjab and offer a forum for the PPP to express its concerns over its collaboration with PML-N in the province.

Both parties seek to fortify their partnership and optimize governance techniques in Punjab.
