Monsoon rains in Punjab claim 29 lives, leaving 203 injured: PDMA

– The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued its report on the damages caused by this year’s monsoon rains, saying that 29 people lost their lives and 203 were injured in rain-related incidents across the province. The authority has also sounded a fresh caution to the government in the run-up to the third spell of monsoon rains.

The PDMA study said majority of the fatalities were due to collapse of mud and decrepit buildings, lightning strikes and electrocution during the recent monsoon season. The report added that 52 houses were partially damaged due to severe rainfall while six livestock animals were also killed.

In view of third spell of monsoon rains in the coming days, Director General PDMA has advised the district administration to stay on high alert, warning of possibility of urban flooding and flash floods in various places. Authorities have been asked to take all precautionary precautions and make all necessary arrangements to reduce the dangers.

The PDMA chief said the maximum deaths were due to the collapse of roofs of old and unsafe buildings. Citizens have also been alerted not to go near exposed electricity lines and utility poles when it rains to avoid electrocution.

The Punjab government’s policy provides financial support of between 1 million to 5 million to the families of individuals who lost their lives in rain-related disasters.
