Pakistan has expressed significant concern at the UN Security Council over the deteriorating situation in Palestine and urged Israel to immediately stop its illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian areas.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar, speaking at a session of the Security Council, said the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories is extremely critical and violence by Israeli settlers and illegal settlement activities are unacceptable.

“Despite the ceasefire in Gaza, Palestinian casualties persist,” he added, urging the Security Council to adopt decisive actions to guarantee that Israel complies with international law.

The Pakistani envoy urged for prompt restitution of withheld finances of the Palestinian Authority and cease to the annexation of Palestinian territories, demolition of homes and forceful displacement of Palestinians.

Asim Iftikhar underscored the importance of protecting Palestinians from violence at the hands of settlers, and restated the only long-term way to peace is through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the 1967 boundaries with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He also stressed that the two-state solution is the only viable framework for a permanent peace and stability in the Middle East.
