Pakistan envoy says India misusing Indus Water Treaty
Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, has accused India of trying to distort the structure and history of the Indus Waters Treaty, saying the accord is still in force.
Sheikh remarked in an article in an American publication that both Pakistan and India were bound by the treaty and there was no clause in the pact permitting either party to suspend it unilaterally. “The Indus Waters Treaty is still in force and relevant to all the parties,” Sheikh wrote, adding that Pakistan was committed to implementing the agreement.
The ambassador stated that India’s unilateral activities threatened peace and security in South Asia but did not give details.
The Indus Waters Treaty, agreed in 1960 between India and Pakistan with World Bank support, deals with the sharing of waters from the Indus river system between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.
