Social media application suspension and cell phone signal deactivation during Muharram were prohibited by the federal authorities on Friday in an effort “to maintain peace.”
Following reports of subversive activity coming from across the border, the Punjab government asked the center one day ago to restrict the use of Facebook, TikTok, X (Twitter), and WhatsApp from Muharram 6 to 11.
The federal government reportedly rejected the plea and instructed the relevant authorities to put in place impenetrable security measures for Muharram. Only in areas where processions and rallies are held is it permitted to switch down mobile phone signals.
The federal interior secretary has received a recommendation from the Punjab government to prohibit social media use from Muharram 6–11 in order to prevent the propagation of hate speech and false information and prevent sectarian violence.
