Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to United Nations Asim Iftikhar has warned that terror attacks in Pakistan from the territory of Afghanistan is jeopardising world peace. “The world wants peace but Afghanistan is harbouring terror organisations,” Iftikhar said.

The increase in terrorist attacks in Pakistan poses a threat to world peace and the country’s land of Afghanistan remains a safe haven for terrorist groups, Asim Iftikhar said at a Security Council meeting on the situation in Afghanistan, adding that Pakistan had taken many steps to provide for humanitarian assistance, political relations and trade and that there was hope for peace and an end to the bloodshed from the Taliban government.

Asim Iftikhar stated it was hoped that the Taliban will execute their promises and become a responsible administration and take action against the proscribed TTP, BLA and ISIS. The Taliban unfortunately failed and ignored Pakistan’s security concerns.

The permanent representative said Pakistan had become the main target because of the freedom that terrorists had obtained in Afghanistan.

“Terrorism in Pakistan is also conducted by Afghan nationals. They’re exploiting billions of dollars of military weaponry left behind by foreign forces. So far there have been around 290 occurrences of confiscation of modern weaponry, during the year 2025.

He further said that Pakistan witnessed over 5,300 incidences of terrorism and more than 1,200 Pakistanis lost their lives due to terrorism originating from Afghanistan.

“The investigation into the attack on a police post in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has proved that the planning was done in Afghanistan,” Asim Iftikhar stated. The Taliban had embarked on the dangerous path of scientific cooperation with terrorist forces and Pakistan will defend itself for its sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security.

He added Qatar, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and China had made earnest attempts to reconcile. The Taliban’s failure to disassociate itself from proscribed TTP and BLA is a clear sign of its involvement and Pakistan cannot remain a mute spectator.

“For his own security he stated he would reply under the right to self-defence. The report of the Secretary-General seeks to transfer the burden for the problems of Afghanistan to external causes. Counting killed terrorists as civilian casualties makes the UN reporting not credible.

The UN report did not shed light on the stockpiles of small arms in Afghanistan, he said. The cause of Afghan suffering is the Taliban’s irresponsible governance and extremist ideology, he said. The closure of the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan is not an obstacle for humanitarian aid supplies, he said.

He said the Afghan Taliban regime itself refuses to allow aid shipments to enter. He said women and girls in Afghanistan are being deprived of their basic human rights and dignity. He said Pakistan has borne the burden of millions of Afghan refugees for over four decades.

Asim Iftikhar stated the UN should resolve unresolved applications for resettlement of Afghan residents in third countries. Pakistan’s demand is simple: there should be verifiable action against terrorist groups. He said the clock is ticking on the Taliban to get their act together and make things better.
