Allegations made by the police against students who participated in demonstrations against private colleges have been dismissed by a Rawalpindi court.

Following allegations of vandalism by the students during protests, the government filed a lawsuit against them. The court’s ruling follows.

By dismissing the cases, the court underscored the need of maintaining peaceful protests while safeguarding the rights of students.

Following the unsubstantiated and purported rape case of female students on campus, hundreds of students and miscreants from different Punjabi cities were arrested by Punjab Police on Thursday. They were allegedly protesting by vandalising private college campuses throughout the province, including the capital city of Lahore.

After a private college student was allegedly raped, there were riots in Lahore. Students and “miscreants” battled with police, set fire to motorcycles, and vandalised property.

Sub-inspector Usman Akbar reported that 200 to 250 unidentified people were involved in a case that Lahore Police detained from the Harbanspura police station.

The FIR states that six motorcycles were set on fire and considerable damage was done to the campus as a result of demonstrators attacking the police with petrol bombs. Twenty-four of the vandals’ accomplices have been taken into custody by police.
