President Joe Biden has received a letter from sixty-two members of the U.S. House of Representatives advocating for the release of Imran Khan, the former prime minister and founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who is still being held in Pakistan.
In the letter, efforts are urged to cease the continued arrest of PTI employees and to free all political prisoners in Pakistan, including Khan.
The letter emphasizes how crucial human rights are to U.S. policy with Pakistan. It calls on the Biden administration to ask the Pakistani government for guarantees that Imran Khan would be safe and his welfare would be guaranteed. Additionally, the members of Congress have called on representatives of the U.S. embassy to pay the PTI leader a visit in order to assess his condition.
According to the lawmakers, there has been a “crackdown on social media” and increased measures to stifle political activity in Pakistan.
In addition, the letter cites claims of anomalies and electoral tampering in Pakistan’s most recent general elections, accusing officials of trying to deny voters their right to vote. In Pakistan, the Congress members stressed that the United States should support democracy and human rights.
