Rain, thunderstorm forecast in Pakistan from today

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, wind and thundershowers in the upper regions of the nation from August 29 to September 5 with isolated heavy falls likely to occur at various places.

The Met Office has urged province and district authorities to stay aware and take preventive steps to deal with probable weather-related catastrophes.

Monsoon currents are now influencing the upper portions of the country, while a westerly wave is forecast to approach the region from August 31 and remain influential until September 5, the PMD said.

Punjab rain forecast

Isolated heavy falls with rain and thunderstorms are expected in Islamabad and different parts of upper Punjab including Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Lahore, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Narowal, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Wazirabad and Hafizabad during August 29 to September 5.

Parts of southern and central Punjab including Kasur, Okara, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Sahiwal and Pakpattan are likely to experience rain from September 1 to 5.

Weather conditions in KP, Kashmir & GB

Rain and thunderstorms are also likely in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from August 29 to September 5, including Peshawar, Swat, Chitral, Dir, Mardan, Nowshera, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Kohat and other tribal areas.

Rain and thunderstorms are forecast in Azad Kashmir from August 29 to September 6, mainly in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh, Kotli, Mirpur and the surrounding regions.

Several districts of Gilgit-Baltistan including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza and Gilgit may see rain from August 30 to September 6.

Meanwhile, predominantly hot and humid weather is likely to prevail over most portions of Sindh and Balochistan.

Fear of landslides and urban flooding

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that from August 31 to September 5, heavy rainfall could bring urban floods in low-lying districts of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore.

Flash flooding is also possible in minor streams and nullahs in Kashmir, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Landslides may occur in hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat and Kashmir.

The Met Office warned tourists and travellers to take care and told producers to organise agricultural activities in line with the current weather conditions.
