On this day, we observe the “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking” to reaffirm Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to stepping up action and fostering collaboration in order to jointly realise the vision of a global community free from drug addiction. The event reminds us all of our joint obligations to stop the illegal drug trade and trafficking. As illegal substances continue to threaten the health and welfare of our people, Pakistan is resolute in its efforts to stop and eliminate their dissemination.

This year’s theme, “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” highlights the adoption of evidence-based preventive techniques and serves as a reminder of the critical role that prevention plays in our society as we consider the effects of drugs.

Realising that drug abuse is a worldwide problem that transcends national borders and plagues society with related crime and violence, the Pakistani government gives tackling drug abuse and implementing efficient countermeasures against illicit trafficking top priority.

We must take international best practices into account in our joint fight against this threat, emphasising the protection of human rights and ensuring that those suffering from addiction get the critical care they require. This includes making health and mental health services more easily accessible for rehabilitation and using research findings into the creation of policy.

Let us recommit to fighting the illegal drug trade together, with a renewed sense of resolve. This is my chance to call on NGOs, civil society groups, religious authorities, and the media to actively assist the government in combating drug misuse, drug-related crimes, and the stigma associated with drug use. For the next generation, let’s create a better and healthier future.
