The federal authorities prohibited the suspension of social media programs and the shutdown of mobile phone signals during Muharram in order to uphold harmony.

The Punjab government has urged the central government to temporarily ban popular social media applications such as Facebook, TikTok, X (Twitter), and WhatsApp from Muharram 6 to 11. This request was made in response to intelligence reports indicating the presence of disruptive operations originating from neighboring countries.

According to reliable sources, the federal government has rejected the proposal and instructed the relevant agencies to provide meticulous security measures during Muharram. However, it only permitted the disabling of mobile phone signals in locations specifically designated for processions and gatherings.

Punjab government has proposed a six-day ban on social media during Muharram.

The Punjab administration has proposed to the federal interior secretary to impose a ban on social media during the period of 6th to 11th Muharram in order to regulate the dissemination of hateful content and false information, with the aim of preventing sectarian conflict.
