World Ocean Day is being celebrated across the globe including in Pakistan today (Monday) to emphasise the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and motivate collective action to safeguard marine environments.

Every year on 8 June, World Ocean Day encourages action for the benefits of the ocean and its people all year. The topic for this year is ‘Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean’.

Ocean covers roughly 70 percent of the planet. It is our source of life, sustaining the food of man and all other organisms on earth.

The ocean generates at least 50 percent of the planet’s oxygen, is home to most of earth’s biodiversity and is the principal source of protein for more than a billion people worldwide. Not to mention the ocean is essential to our economy with an anticipated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based sectors by 2030.

The ocean has many benefits, and is currently in need of support.

We are taking more from the ocean than can be replaced. 90 percent of big fish populations are depleted and 50 percent of coral reefs are gone. We need to find a new balance with the ocean, one that does not drain its bounty but rather renews its vitality and gives it new life.

The theme for World Oceans Day 2026 is “Reimagine”, calling us to transform the way we see and treat the ocean. We have looked at it for too long as something far away yet it is part of our daily lives: the air we breathe, the food we eat and the climate balance that makes our life possible. We must cease being only recipients of its resources and become real stewards of its future.
