Up until July 3, NDMA predicts sporadic pre-monsoon rainfall.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecast sporadic pre-monsoon rain in portions of Pakistan from June 28 to July 3, increasing the chances of glacier melting, flash floods and landslides in northern regions.
The NDMA stated that the combination of extreme heat and anticipated pre-monsoon rains could speed up glacier melt, causing sudden rise in water levels in rivers and streams in Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu & Kashmir.
The government cautioned that vulnerable areas could encounter glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), flash flooding and landslides during the forecast timeframe.
Residents, tourists and visitors have been warned to exercise caution in high-risk areas including Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Upper and Lower Chitral and Swat.
NDMA asked the people to avoid moving unnecessarily near rivers, streams, glacial lakes and riverbanks and report any unexpected situation to the concerned local authorities immediately.
Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) have also been ordered to stay on high alert and be prepared for any possible emergency situation due to the prevailing meteorological condition.
