US delegation visits Lahore historical places, pays homage to Allama Iqbal tomb

As part of a cultural and heritage tour of the city, some of Lahore’s most celebrated historical landmarks, including the mausoleum of the national poet and philosopher Allama Muhammad Iqbal, were visited by a United States delegation.

The excursion was meant to introduce the group to the centuries old architectural heritage , cultural identity and tourism attractions of Lahore. The party was escorted at all times by Walled City of Lahore Authority officials, who delivered full briefings at each site.

The group began its visit with laying wreath at the mausoleum of Allama Muhammad Iqbal. The delegates paid tribute to the eminent philosopher, poet and thinker, who is popularly known as Poet of the East. The tour was an important element of the cultural agenda of the party and highlighted the lasting impact of Iqbal on the intellectual and literary heritage of the region.

The party next visited the ancient Lahore Fort which is one of the greatest surviving examples of Mughal architecture and cultural heritage in South Asia. During the visit, participants visited many notable portions of the fort including Hazuri Bagh, Diwan-e-Aam and Diwan-e-Khas. They also visited the historic Sheesh Mahal, the landmark Alamgiri Gate and the famous Picture Wall and were given detailed briefings on the historical importance, architectural aspects and cultural worth of the monument.

The delegation visited the world famous Badshahi Mosque where they expressed keen interest in the architectural brilliance, historical background and religious significance of the monument. “It is one of the most loved monuments in Lahore and an important part of the city’s lively cultural scene,” officials said.

The delegation also visited several other heritage and cultural sites across Lahore as part of the programme to familiarise the visitors about the historic identity and tourism potential of Lahore.

The delegation was received by Director General Walled City of Lahore Authority Najam-ul-Saqib and briefed at several places. Senior officials of the administration accompanied the visitors during the trip and briefed them about the protected legacy of Lahore, restoration projects and ongoing conservation measures.

The members of the US delegation appreciated the preservation of the historic monuments of Lahore, the restoration work undertaken at important sites and the steps made to protect the city’s cultural legacy.

The Walled City of Lahore Authority said such visits assist display Pakistan’s ancient legacy to an international audience and aid in promoting cultural tourism.
