The Communication and Information Ministry announced on Friday that the strong earthquakes that hit northern Venezuela last month left 2,645 dead and 12,666 injured.

The government said in a statement on US social media platform X that 6,462 individuals have been rescued and 86,117 households aided after the quakes, which hit 885 buildings, 189 of which collapsed.

The statement claimed more than 3,300 international rescue workers were sent to the quake-hit area and Caracas has about 30,000 people on the ground for relief activities.

The US Geological Survey said two earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 hit the South American country 39 seconds apart on June 24.

On Friday the government also claimed there have been 890 aftershocks so far.

The quake registered 7.5 magnitude 23 kilometers (14.3 miles) southeast of Yumare and 7.2 magnitude 23.9 km (14.9 mi) northeast of San Felipe, both in the state of Yaracuy.
