Pakistani actor Zhalay Sarhadi likened social media to a stern desi mother in response to the controversies surrounding a campaign for Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
These days, a number of social media influencers and prominent Pakistani celebrities—such as singer Aima Baig, Urwa Hocane, Sanam Saeed, Saba Qamar, and Zhalay Sarhadi—have been a part of the campaign that celebrates Maryam Nawaz’s achievements.
However, there has been a backlash against the effort from the general population, leading to calls for a boycott of the involved musicians.
On her Instagram account, Zhalay Sarhadi responded to the criticism with a funny comment that likened social media users to rigid “desi moms.”
“Social media is like a desi mom,” the writer stated in her essay. If you leave a glass on the table after a long day at work, someone will say, “Useless!” There’s nothing you do.
Sarhadi highlighted that users on social media also make snap judgments based on a single mistake, much like a desi mother would call attention to little mistakes.
