At least 14 children were murdered and many others injured in the collapse of the roof of a school academy in Lahore’s Kahna neighborhood.

Punjab Health Minister says dead toll from terrible tragedy has risen to 14. Rescue officials stated about 20 to 25 people, including a female teacher and largely small children, were inside the tuition facility when it collapsed.

Rescue authorities claimed they were alerted about the incident at 4:45pm, following which crews initiated an operation and rescued numerous youngsters from under the debris. Officials have earlier said the death toll might rise.

The structure was also used as a school in the morning hours and youngsters were attending tuition lessons at the academy when the roof fell in, residents added.

The police stated construction was ongoing on the upper floor of the structure while youngsters were on the lower floor. The owner of the residence and two other people were put into arrest in the wake of the incident.

DIG Operations Lahore Faisal Kamran said the roof was fragile and was built with girders. He added the structure had been deteriorated further by rainwater. He said 14 children were killed and nine injured, and five persons were held for inquiry.

The DIG Operations said the rescue operation was over and the area has been cleared. A full inquiry into the causes of the collapse has been launched by the police.

Rescue officials claimed the operation was over, with 20 youngsters pulled from the rubble. Of them, 14 died, and six injured youngsters were sent to hospitals for medical treatment.

Punjab’s Information Minister Azma Bukhari said that the children were learning under a dilapidated roof in a tutoring center run privately in a house. She stated that the Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz was monitoring the situation closely and rescue teams reached the spot quickly.

She said more than 18 children were first taken to hospitals, and the government’s priority was rescuing children from the rubble. ‘Hospitals have medical facilities, drugs and doctors,’ she remarked.

PM grieves incident

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his great grief over the loss of young lives and prayed for the departed souls and patience for the bereaved families. He also urged the authorities to offer the best possible medical treatment to the injured.

CM takes cognizance

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has taken notice of the event and has asked prompt report and identification of the persons responsible. She urged provincial ministers to supervise rescue and relief activities.
