Lawyer for Imran Khan files written arguments in solitary confinement case
Founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan’s counsel Barrister Salman Safdar on Thursday submitted written arguments in a case pertaining to his and wife Bushra Bibi’s alleged solitary confinement.
Safdar termed the report presented by superintendent of Adiala Jail as deceptive and against facts. He urged the court to appoint a judicial assistant, local commission or amicus curiae to assess the matter independently.
The lawyer said the commission should interview Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi and then the court should obtain an assessment report. He also asked the court to call both the detainees and record their statements about their purported solitary confinement.
We can also capture their statements using video link, Safdar stated. He requested a board be set up consisting of an expert, a state representative and representatives of the petitioners. He said the board should visit Central Jail Adiala, review pertinent facilities and records and file an independent report about treatment of the prisoners in isolation.
Written submissions also urged provision of video-link contact capabilities for Imran Khan like the facility offered to inmates by the Punjab chief minister. The lawyer also urged the provision of books and television facility to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi.
Safdar claimed Imran Khan’s legal team was representing him in over 300 cases and demanded that lawyers be allowed to contact him as per jail rules without any impediment.
He also sought the assurance of regular weekly interactions between the detainees and their family members and friends within the applicable jail regulations. The lawyer sought explicit orders to the administrator Adiala Jail to allow such meetings without any unwarranted limitations or hurdles.
The written arguments also ask for Imran Khan’s medical reports and his complete medical record to be released, including the medical record to be provided to the court.
The arguments stated that the Adiala Jail superintendent allegedly defied court directives and put in an incomplete report. Safdar claimed the report, only a page and a half long, failed to deal with the grave concerns and questions raised in the case.
He said that the movement of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi could not be called unrestrained as both convicts were not allowed to go outside their allocated zones.
Safdar’s written submissions run to 19 pages. Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro had ordered to submit written arguments in the case.
The Punjab government has decided to celebrate Basant next year with the traditional kite-flying event being held in February instead of January.
In this regard, Punjab Home Department and the district administration have prepared a draft plan for Basant in Lahore next year.
The festival has been rescheduled to February and the final date will be revealed after the consent of the provincial government, sources added.
Preparations will be mindful of last year’s experience and preparations. Permission for kite, string and other associated manufacturing operations is also likely to be given soon while laws and regulations governing kite flying will be completed before the festival.

Foreign Minister Al Zayani thanked DPM Dar on signing of the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. He also said he would visit Pakistan soon.
Dar appreciated Dr. Al Zayani’s interest to visit Pakistan and thanked him for his good sentiments.
He emphasised Pakistan’s strong commitment to promote dialogue and diplomacy to achieve peace and stability in the region and beyond.
US President Donald Trump said on Monday he will demand that Iran pay compensation for “all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded,” in response to Iran seeking compensation for the damages it has incurred from US and Israeli attacks.
Trump’s social media post came after Iran said over the weekend it was nearing a deal with Oman defining new shipping lanes between them through the Strait of Hormuz but repeated that the US must meet conditions including compensation and an end to sanctions and military threats, before the strategic waterway is reopened.
“It is an interesting idea because now I am likewise demanding compensation from Iran, for all of the people that they have killed and gravely wounded with their roadside bombs and many conflicts,” he wrote on Truth Social.
Trump also referenced and claimed compensation from Iran for the October 2000 deadly bombing of the US Navy guided-missile destroyer USS Cole at a Yemeni port.
The FBI has attributed that bombing, which killed 17 sailors and wounded more than three dozen others, to al Qaeda.
Trump added that Tehran should also pay compensation to the families of the thousands of people during anti-government protests in January, Iran’s worst domestic unrest since the era of its 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Rights groups say the Iranian government has continued to crack down on opponents during the war.
