18th Amendment provides substantial resources to provincial governments: Mustafa Kamal

Federal Minister Mustafa Kamal has said that the existing structure of government in Pakistan is not in a position to adequately meet the requirements of the people and new administrative entities should be created.

Pakistan was no longer left with four provinces but had become four sovereign states after the 18th Constitutional Amendment, stated Federal Minister Mustafa Kamal.

The present system of governance cannot operate Pakistan.

Addressing a gathering here Sunday Kamal said the 18th Constitutional Amendment devolved huge authority and resources to the provincial administrations.

“The four provincial governments have deprived people of basic facilities,” Kamal added, saying that people are still facing shortages in education, healthcare, employment, water, power and gas.

The federal minister said the creation of additional administrative entities was no longer a political demand but had turned into a kind of need for Pakistan.

He believed that smaller administrative entities would move government closer to the people and improve the delivery of key services.

Kamal said that the resources given through the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award might be used more efficiently in the smaller administrative divisions. He suggested that the establishment of more units might also assist stop the use of phoney domiciles and deal with issues of merit and employment prospects.

“I urge the youth to help create new administrative units,” the federal minister said, adding that such reorganisation may bring about better governance and more access to public resources and services.

PTI long march to go forward as per schedule: Barrister Gohar

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has said the party wants the negotiations with the government to be successful but the two parties had yet to decide when the next round of talks will take place.

Talking to reporters after a standoff arose between the government and PTI Gohar said that the party’s lengthy march would go forward as per schedule calling it the party’s right.

He said no step should be taken under the garb of the long march that could cause animosity, division or conflict among the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or undermine the mandate, autonomy and powers of the province.

“There is no room for any measure against provincial rights or the public mandate, which will also be against the spirit of the 18th Amendment,” Gohar stated.

PTI chairman said: “The response to the long march should not be imposition of emergency or governor’s rule. He said there was still no decision on when the next government-PTI delegates meeting would be held.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister Talal Chaudhry said that several issues were agreed upon in the negotiations but the form of agreement was amended numerous times on the directions of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government.

He said the province government was not prepared to implement the National Action Plan and that was why the talks could not move forward.

Security forces kill eight India-backed militants in KP’s DI Khan operation

  • Eight terrorists sponsored by India were killed in an intelligence-based operation carried out by security forces in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan province, security sources said on Sunday.

The operation was begun after sources said that intelligence assessments had suggested the presence of militants in the region. The operation left eight members of the group, including three of its top commanders, dead.

Security sources stated they had retrieved a considerable number of guns and ammunition and foreign currency from the insurgents.

Sources said that the operation was conducted under the government’s Azm-e-Istehkam vision to fight terrorism and to provide enduring peace and stability in the country.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated the security forces for an excellent and timely operation against the extremists.

“The entire nation is behind the security forces in their fight against terrorism,” the prime minister added. He underlined the government’s intention to continue its operations against Fitna al-Khawarij until the menace of terrorism is removed.

Elimination of terrorism was vital for peace and stability in the country, the prime minister stated.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also praised the security forces for the successful operation against militants in Dera Ismail Khan.

Rana Sanaullah says PTI long march will not be permitted to enter Islamabad

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has claimed that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) long march will not be allowed to enter Islamabad.

Rana Sanaullah while talking to media after talks at the Parliament House stated that the talks were mostly about the law and order and terrorism situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He stated that the administration had asked the province government to play an effective role in the war against terrorism but the opposition was not ready to collaborate on the subject.

Rana Sanaullah claimed the government has shown flexibility on talks with PTI founder Imran Khan but the two sides could not reach consensus on other crucial topics.

He made it clear that the scheduled PTI long march will not be allowed to enter the confines of Islamabad.

The adviser said everyone knew the points on which the two parties could not reach an agreement. But he added, the door to future conversations might be kept open if collaboration was increased in the battle against terrorism.
