Twin Cities: Nullah Lai water level increases after heavy rain, low-lying regions flooded
Heavy rains in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have inundated low-lying neighborhoods, as the water level in Nullah Lai continues to rise, leading authorities to caution residents living along its banks.
The district government said the water level at Kattarian was 20 feet while the flow was reported at 17 feet at Gawalmandi Bridge.
Alerts were sounded in regions around Nullah Lai and inhabitants living along the river were told to evacuate immediately. Authorities claimed floodwater had penetrated into the residences in Dhok Khabba and Sadiqabad.
Rainfall statistics showed Golra had the maximum quantity of rain with 144 millimeters followed by Bokra with 132mm, Pirwadhai with 105mm and Gawalmandi with 77mm.
Heavy rain was also reported in Gujrat, Sialkot, Jhelum, Shakargarh and the neighboring districts. Several energy feeders tripped, causing disruption in the power supply to the localities concerned.
This development comes as the Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued an alert for the sixth spell of monsoon rainfall in Punjab.
The weather agency has expected rain in various parts of the country till August 21. It also warned of urban flooding in the low-lying neighborhoods of Mardan and Swabi.
The department has also warned of the threat of landslides in the hilly districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galiyat and Kashmir.

Pakistan to assume CAREC chairmanship in 2027, host 26th Ministerial Conference
Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal claimed that Pakistan would assume the presidency of the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program in 2027 and host the 26th CAREC Ministerial Conference,
Speaking at the 25th CAREC Ministerial Conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Iqbal urged for CAREC transport routes to be turned into next-generation economic corridors by integrating infrastructure, logistics, digital connection, energy cooperation and climate resilience.
The 25th ministerial conference is taking place in Ulaanbaatar from September 29 to October 2.
“CAREC Corridors 5 and 6 offer Pakistan an opportunity to link Central Asian markets to the Arabian Sea and boost more economic activity along the routes,” Iqbal remarked.
“Rather than just allowing trucks to go through the corridors, the emphasis should be on allowing businesses to use the corridors reliably, competitively and profitably,” he said.
This will entail upgrading the CAREC highways, modernizing border facilities at Torkham and Chaman, enhancing rail freight capacity with the proposed ML-1 expansion and improving the connectivity with dry ports and seaports, added the minister.
Iqbal highlighted the need for a digital corridor across the CAREC region and said Pakistan’s Single Window system could be a basis for incremental digital integration with regional partners.
