Trump brings back Kim Jong-un link with vintage pic
President Donald Trump on Friday reminded followers of his historic diplomacy with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, publishing a photo from their landmark 2019 summit at the inter-Korean border, and said the two leaders “get along GREAT.”
The post comes as the White House continues to hint Trump is eager to engage Kim “without any preconditions,” although it is uncertain if Pyongyang will respond amid its increasing economic, diplomatic and military relations with Moscow.
“Although this picture looks unfriendly, there are many where we are smiling, Kim Jong Un and I get along GREAT!” Trump posted Saturday on Truth Social.
Trump and Kim met face-to-face three times during Trump’s first term, in Singapore in June 2018, Hanoi in February 2019 and Panmunjom in June 2019.
Their third summit attracted global attention when Trump crossed the Military Demarcation Line and briefly went onto North Korean ground with Kim, the first sitting U.S. president to do so.
Trump has posted pictures from his meetings with Kim. In June he uploaded a snapshot of their historic 2018 summit in Singapore, raising speculation that he could be looking to resurrect the personal diplomacy that marked his first-term approach to North Korea.
Kim may also be interested in reviving summit diplomacy with Trump, perhaps after U.S. midterm elections this autumn, Victor Cha, Korea Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), wrote in an analysis Thursday.
Cha suggested Pyongyang would seek a more “revisionist” strategy to solidify North Korea’s status as a nuclear-armed state — thus opening a door for further high-level talks with Washington.
